An Ultramarathoner Told He Would Never Run Again

Richard Donovan is an ultramarathon runner known for extreme endurance challenges, including running seven marathons on seven continents in seven days and running across the United States. When knee arthritis threatened his ability to run, he was given the familiar advice: stop running, wait for knee replacement, and accept that the sport he loved was behind him.

Richard came to The Stone Clinic for a different answer. His goal was not simply to walk without pain. He wanted to keep running at the highest level.

The Technology Behind Richard's Return

Richard was not treated with a one-size-fits-all knee replacement. His arthritis was isolated to the inside of the knee, so Dr. Stone used robotic partial knee replacement to resurface only the damaged compartment while preserving the healthy parts of the joint.

When Richard's other knee later became painful, Dr. Stone combined robotic partial knee replacement with biologic cartilage repair. That combination of precise robotic surgery, biologic repair, and athlete-focused rehab program helped Richard return to the kind of running many patients are still told is impossible after knee replacement.

Running Across America After Partial Knee Replacement

One year after his second partial knee replacement, Richard began his TransUSA Run at the Boston Marathon and finished 3,200 miles and 16 states later at the Santa Monica Pier in California.

Running more than 40 miles per day on partial knee replacements was a phenomenal accomplishment and a direct challenge to the old assumptions about knee replacement and sport.

Richard's story raises the bar for what athletes should expect after knee replacement. If you have been told to stop running, stop competing, or wait until your life gets smaller, his recovery is a reason to ask whether better options exist.
