Knee patient testimonials
Many of our patients have benefited from knee surgery.
Meniscus transplant patients
Our patient came to us after a long history of knee issues. She'd had surgery to repair 2 medial meniscus tears in her 20s and since then had never really had a pain free knee. She spent her 30s having kids and staying active as possible. In her early 40s she went to see an orthopedic surgeon to take care of some knee pain, thinking that the procedure would be simple but was shocked to be told that in fact she needed a total knee replacement. " I wasn't ready to do that" She found Dr. Stone who told her that it she was a candidate for a meniscus transplant. "Here I am a year out and I am doing everything I could do pre-injury. I run without knee pain. I ski without knee pain and I bike without knee pain." She adds, "Most importantly for me, I have 3 kids, 3 girls and we are an active family and for me to be able to hit the slopes with my kids or go for a mountain bike ride or take a hike and maintain an active healthy life and model an active healthy life for them that was probably one of my hugest reasons for doing this."
Brandon had a meniscus transplant some years after having part of his meniscus removed due to an injury. His knee had become painful and his doctor had told him that he would have arthritis in a few years and ultimately ended up with an artificial knee replacement. After his meniscus transplant at the Stone Clinic, he stayed 7 weeks in San Francisco to rehabilitate. He came 5 days a week to work with our physical therapists.
Articular Cartilage Paste Graft Patient Testimonials
This competitive young athlete destroyed his knee in high school and initial surgery had not been successful. At 15 years old he traveled 3,000 miles to be treated with an articular paste graft, ultimately managing to get back to ice-hockey and many other sports.
This is a 37 year old patient from Ohio that had a full-thickness chondral lesion that was repaired with the articular cartilage paste graft procedure at The Stone Clinic in 2009.
BioKnee Patient Testimonials
A BioKnee is an alternative to a total knee replacement. It uses a combination of procedures to rebuild a knee using donor tissue and stem cells to regrow the damaged articular cartilage.
It took 18 months for this patient to get permission from military doctors to have a BioKnee, and avoid an artificial knee replacement. The procedure saved his knee and saved his career. ACL Injury Patient Testimonials
Professional Skier Pep Fujas talks about how The Stone Clinic has fixed his failed ACL repair with donor tissue.
In 2002, Canadian Pro Skier Rick Lewon had his right ACL reconstructed by Dr. Kevin Stone, using a Z-lig replacement device a natural alternative tissue engineered from porcine tissue.. Dr. Stone's treatment was a medical breakthrough and the first non-human biologic method for ACL reconstruction of the knee. After this surgery, Lewon went on to win numerous Canadian Downhill Masters titles. 11 years later, his Xenograft is still going strong and is doing a lot better than the ACL reconstruction he had done on his left leg, which used his own hamstring. Lewon says he is hoping to one day get the Z-lig on on that knee too.
ACL reconstruction using the Z-lig replacement device
The Z-Lig is an off the shelf natural tissue ACL replacement device allowing the reconstruction of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament without needing to use a patient's own tissue.
Our patient Mike ruptured his right ACL while Limbo dancing at a wedding. He had it repaired using the Z-lig ligament replacement device engineered from porcine tissue. Previously, Mike had ruptured his left ACL and had it repaired using an autograft from his own patella tendon. "The experiences could not have been more different" he says. Unlike the autograft, the Z-lig procedure and the recovery was minimal. "In fact, I was a bit worried because my knee was so stable and so pain free that I thought I might damage the knee somehow because it felt so good so soon!" He now does all the things he does before the surgery, league basketball, coaches baseball, plays with his dog. In fact, he says "because of the physical therapy and the activities I went though, I think it's better than it was before the injury"
MAKOPlasty Partial Knee Replacement Patient Testimonials
Hear from patients who have benefited from a MAKOPlasty Partial Knee Replacement -PKR. A partial, or unicondylar, joint replacement resurfaces only the worn out portion of the joint, either the inside, outside or kneecap, leaving the rest of the joint alone. For unparalleled accuracy in placement, Kevin R. Stone performs a MAKOplasty® partial knee resurfacing procedure using the MAKO Surgical Corp Robotic Arm Interactive Orthopaedic System.
25 years ago, our patient injured his knee playing rugby and had his meniscus removed. By the time he came to see Dr. Stone, he was bone-on-bone on his left knee and had had 4 surgeries. All orthopedists he went to see told him he would need a total knee replacement. Dr. Stone was able to help our patient avoid a total knee replacement by doing a MAKOplasty partial knee replacement. " For me this was the perfect surgery, I was only on crutches for four days" He was walking on his knee within a week and riding his bicycle within 2 weeks. As an ultra athlete, within two months he was doing 100 mile rides. Less than three months he was skiing - all without pain. Check out the video to learn more about what he's been up to within a year of surgery....including biking around Europe! " I can't say enough good things about this."
For four decades, Lois suffered with knee pain from her arthritis. At 63 years old, her knee had worn down to become bone on bone and she could no longer do any of the things she wanted. After the partial knee replacement, she is now back skiing no problem (storms and all!). "I have absolutely no pain and I feel strong!"
