The professionals at The Stone Clinic believe high-quality care depends
upon training, experience, and perspective. Our team is comprised of
people who listen and understand. Our definition of treatment
is therapeutic interaction with patients, based on lifestyle and activity
goals. We encourage patients to be a part of our team and to
take responsibility in their own recovery to ensure the highest possible
results.
Sharon Bobrow
Office Manager, Executive Assistant
Sharon came to The Stone Clinic in 1998 after a ten-year stint as office
manager at an urgent care center in Marin County. She is a licensed x-ray
technician as well as a medical assistant. In her spare time, Sharon enjoys
traveling and jogging.
Dana
Armstrong
Front Office Coordinator
Dana is our front office super star. She provides great care to The Stone
Clinic patients and always tries to make them smile. She is the first person
patients see at the clinic and has the pleasure of being the last too.
Catherine Gravelle
Patient Coordinator
Catherine graduated cum laude in 2005 with degrees in biology and chemistry
from Dominican University of California where she led the women's basketball
team to the national tournament two years in a row. She has been part of
The Stone Clinic team since graduation. As our patient coordinator, Catherine
specializes in assisting our out-of-town patients with arrangements to receive
The Stone Clinic team’s excellent care. She is also an avid snowboarder
and water skier.
Jackie Gee
Financial Coordinator
Jackie did her undergraduate coursework at Santa Clara University, double
majoring in Combined Sciences (Pre-Health) and Psychology. She has been
a part of The Stone Clinic since high school, working as an Office Assistant.
As our financial coordinator, she assists patients with their insurance.
In her spare time, she enjoys tutoring and traveling.
Megan Kennedy
Transcriptionist
Megan has Bachelors of Arts degrees in both Anthropology and Near Eastern
Studies from the University of Arizona and is currently pursuing her Master’s
of Arts degree in Museum Studies at San Francisco State University. She is
the office transcriptionist and is responsible for putting together the office
visit reports. In her spare time, Megan works on her master’s thesis
and also enjoys running, tennis, and exploring San Francisco.
Thomas Turek
Senior Scientist
Thomas focuses his research on orthopaedics, biomaterials, and product development.
Prior to his affiliation with The Stone Clinic, he served with Genetics Institute
of Cambridge Massachusetts and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department
of Chemical Engineering. Research publications include bone graft substitutes
and advanced research into growth factor delivery for orthopaedic, oral,
and maxillofacial indications. Thomas serves as a senior scientist for The
Stone Clinic and vice-president of research and development for CrossCart,
Inc.
Abhi Freyer
Research and Grant Coordinator
Abhi graduated from the University of California, Davis with a degree in
biology and economics and has over five years of combined research experience
in molecular biology and chemistry. At The Stone Clinic, Abhi oversees the
collection of clinical research data and coordinates clinical and public
outreach. Research publications and presentations include articular cartilage
paste grafting, meniscus allograft transplantation, and case studies in osteochondritis
dissecans, clavicle fractures, tibial plateau fractures, cartilage restoration,
and meniscus repair. A former member of the UC Davis Cycling team, Abhi is
an avid skier and participant in motor sports.
Wendy
Adelson, MS
Research Coordinator/ Medical Writer
Wendy graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder with a BA
in Kinesiology in 2000 and from San Diego State University with an MS
in Exercise Physiology in 2004. She worked in joint replacement surgery
research for three years at Scripps Clinic in San Diego before joining
The Stone Clinic team. At The Stone Clinic, Wendy oversees the collection
of clinical research data and coordinates clinical and public outreach.
Research publication and presentation topics include articular cartilage
paste grafting, meniscus allograft transplantation, and case studies
in osteochondritis dissecans, clavicle fractures, tibial plateau fractures,
cartilage restoration, and meniscus repair. Wendy is originally from
the Bay Area, is a devoted yogi, and enjoys outdoor activities.
Rima Haggerty
Rima received her undergraduate degree from The University of Portland
where she studied a variety of disciplines including American history,
eastern philosophy and dance. Rima joined The Stone Clinic as an Office
Assistant and she provides outstanding support to the nursing and front
office staff. In addition to her work at the clinic, Rima teaches yoga
all over San Francisco. In her free time she enjoys vegetarian cooking
and spending time outdoors.
Ann
Walgenbach, RNC, FNP, MSN
Ann has worked with Dr. Stone since April 1992 as a nurse practitioner,
surgical assistant, and clinical research coordinator. She also
works with CrossCart, Inc., to ensure the quality of tissue preparation
and harvests and is involved in all aspects of clinical trials. She
attended the UCLA Graduate School of Nursing and has been a registered
nurse for more than 25 years. Prior to joining The Stone Clinic,
Ann worked at the UCLA Medical Center where she experienced a wide
range of medicine including five years in critical care. Ann
has two funny sons, Jake and Joe, a funny husband, and lots of animals.
Natalie
A. Mattos, MSHS, PA-C
Natalie, a northern California native, started her career at The Stone Clinic
in a serendipitous way as a high school athlete and surgical patient. Natalie
participated in both swimming and basketball at Orestimba High School in
Newman, California. After a Bachelors of Science degree in exercise physiology
at Arizona State University, she graduated in 2005 with a Masters of Science
in Heath Sciences and Physicians Assistant Certification from George Washington
University in Washington, D.C. Her clinical internships included Sports Medicine
at The Stone Clinic. Natalie expertly handles all medical issues for The
Stone Clinic patients and is responsible for tissue acquisition.
Mark
Coleman, CRT ARRT
As head of our X-Ray and MRI departments since 1994, Mark is responsible
for all of the images taken at The Stone Clinic and consistently obtains
high-quality images to aid in the proper diagnosis of our patients. He
handles all of the shipping and receiving for the clinic. Mark
graduated in 1993 from City College of San Francisco with an AS degree
in diagnostic medical imaging. In addition, Mark is a talented
artist, his work is proudly displayed at The Stone Clinic.
The Stone Clinic excels in training and conditioning
patients and athletes with the goal of returning them
to their activities fitter, faster, and stronger than
they were before their injury or illness. Throughout
the rehabilitation process, it is important that a certain level of
physical fitness is maintained. This increases metabolism, strength,
and functional mobility, and provides an improved mental outlook (all
of which speeds healing). The Stone Clinic programs are individualized
and geared for professional athletes and weekend warriors, as well
as more sedentary people with arthritis. Our therapists work with the
Lawrence Pech Dance Company, Alonzo King's Lines Ballet, Smuin Ballets/SF,
Marin Ballet and professional athletes from multiple sports.
The Stone Clinic, in conjunction with the Stone Research Foundation,
holds training and conditioning camps for high-level and professional
athletes. These camps consist of two- to five-day programs that
incorporate weight training, speed workouts, plyometric sessions, water
workouts, sports nutrition counseling, and functional/sport-specific
training sessions. Nationally renowned professionals are recruited to
train and condition these athletes and provide them with world-class
instruction.
Laura
Keller, MPT
With a master’s in physical therapy, Laura strives to stay on top
of the most innovative and progressive techniques in her field through
continuous education, She has completed the highly esteemed Folsom
Long-Term Advanced Manual Orthopaedics Course. She has participated
in many community health action outreach programs as a physical therapy
coordinator and has been involved with treatment and instruction on injury
prevention for the Sacramento Ballet. Before she came to The Stone
Clinic, Laura was the manager of two outpatient orthopaedic clinics. Laura
has a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish from the University of California,
Santa Barbara, and spent a year living in Spain to master the language. She
received her master’s degree in physical therapy from Western University
of Health Sciences in Pomona, California. Laura's interests lie
in all things outdoors including mountain biking, volleyball, skiing,
and travel. She has contributed to Ski Racing Journal, Backpacker
Magazine, Ski Magazine, Skiing Magazine, and SkiNet.com.
Tricia
Fong, MSPT, COMT
Tricia completed her Master of Science in Physical
Therapy from the University of Miami, FL in 2000. She has actively pursued
further refinement of physical therapy skills, including a yearlong course
in manual therapy in the Maitland philosophy. In 2005, Tricia passed
the certification exam to become a Certified Orthopedic Manual Therapist.
Aside from being a practicing clinician, Tricia is also involved in
education. She has been a teaching assistant in the Maitland yearlong
course and is an instructor for Maitland-Australian Physiotherapy Seminars.
Outside of the realm of physical therapy, Tricia rock climbs and greatly
enjoys the culinary arts.
Susanne
DeCosterd, MPT
Susanne was recruited to The Stone Clinic because of her excellence in
working with complex shoulder, knee, ankle, and spinal problems. She
had managed an outpatient orthopaedic physical therapy clinic. She
has implemented and directed aquatherapy programs and ski conditioning
classes, as well as core-strengthening classes emphasizing proper body
mechanics, ergonomics, and return-to-work programs. She has
completed the Folsom Long-Term Advanced Manual Therapy Course and received
her undergraduate degree in exercise physiology from Chico State and
her master’s in physical therapy from Western University in Pomona,
California. Susanne enjoys all outdoor activities including,
skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, tennis, and camping. Susanne
has been featured on Living Well television for her expertise
on osteoarthritis and exercise programs for people living with knee
pain.
Kelly Starrett
Kelly joins The Stone Clinic with a strong background of working as an elite-level
strength and conditioning coach. He received his Doctorate in physical therapy
from Samuel Merritt College in Oakland; CA. Kelly also is the founder, current
head coach and a Level III senior coach at San Francisco Crossfit. Founded
in 2005, this athletic training center has been the prime coaching resource
for Olympians, world champions, tri-athletes, and mixed martial arts fighters.
Kelly’s coaching background and physical therapy training make him uniquely
capable of coaching both athletes and non-athletes who are injured or recovering
from injury. Kelly's own background as an athlete and coach includes paddling
whitewater slalom canoe on the U.S. Canoe and Kayak Team and paddling as a
member of the U.S. Whitewater Rafting Team, where he won two national titles
and competed in two world championships. Kelly is the founder and director
of Liquid Camp, a weeklong whitewater kayaking camp for teens living with HIV/AIDS.
In his free time, Kelly enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter, surfing,
paddling, and training.
Devin Wu, PT, L.Ac.
Devin received his master’s of science from the University of the Pacific
in Stockton, California. He too has completed the Folsom Long-Term Advanced Manual
Orthopaedics Course, which focused on Norwegian manual therapy treatment techniques
and principles. Devin came to The Stone Clinic from an outpatient orthopaedic
clinic in Redwood City where he was the lead clinical therapist. In addition
to rehabilitation of the extremities, Devin has a specialty in treating spinal
dysfunction and a strong interest in knee and shoulder injuries. Devin is also
a licensed acupuncturist, utilizing the tools of eastern medical training in
conjunction with his P.T. background. He practices acupuncture at Wu's Healing
Center in San Francisco.
Caroline
B. Palmer, MSPT, OCS, CSCS
Caroline worked at The Stone Clinic for three years and is now working
at an outpatient clinic in Palo Alto. Caroline received her Bachelor’s degree
in exercise physiology from Fresno State and her master’s degree
in physical therapy from Boston University. In 1999, she became a certified
strength and conditioning specialist. Two years later, she became an
orthopaedic clinical specialist. Outside of physical therapy, Caroline
enjoys running, mountain biking, and backpacking.
Marc Lum, MPT, CSCS
Marc received his masters of physical therapy from Mount Saint Mary’s College
in Los Angeles and completed the Folsom Long-Term Advanced Manual Therapy Orthopaedics
Course in 2004. He joined The Stone Clinic physical therapy team after gaining
valuable experience working in a fast-paced outpatient orthopaedic clinic in
Sunnyvale, California. More recently he managed an outpatient orthopaedic clinic
in the Sacramento area. Marc takes a comprehensive approach to rehabilitation
considering the whole body when treating shoulder, knee, ankle, and spine injuries.
He is also a NSCA certified strength and conditioning specialist. In addition
to excellent rehabilitative care, Marc excels in performance enhancement and
sport specific training. He enjoys running, volleyball, golf, outdoor activities,
and being a father.
Maureen
Madden, PT, CSCS
After practicing at The Stone Clinic for almost five years, Maureen moved
to Seattle, Washington where she owns her own P.T. practice, P.T. Pro.
Maureen graduated from the University of Connecticut, cum laude and
with honors in physical therapy in 1991. She spent four years
specializing in spine care in Denver and Sacramento and five years
in Phoenix in a sports medicine setting at the America West Arena where
she had the opportunity to work closely with the Phoenix Suns, Phoenix
Coyotes, and Arizona Rattlers, as well as individuals from other professional
teams across the country. Maureen completed the Folsom Long-Term
Advanced Manual Orthopaedics Course and she combines manual medicine,
PNF, and specific training regimes to help patients reach their maximum
potential. She also draws on her personal experiences as a competitive
rower, recreational cyclist, climber, and runner.
Nicole
Flanagan,
PTA
Nicki joined The Stone Clinic with six years professional experience
in the health and fitness field. She holds her BS in sports management,
physical therapist assistant license, and massage therapist certification. She
has managed corporate fitness centers where she was responsible for
fitness instruction and health and wellness programming. Nicki
has also run her own massage therapy practice for corporate and individual
clientele. She competed at the collegiate level in swimming
and currently runs, competes in triathlons, and numerous other outdoor
activities.
