ACL Injury and Treatment
Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL)

-

ACL Repair - Combines ACL Repair and ACL Injury and Prevention with Initial Results

  • ACL Repair - Once a tear of the ACL has been confirmed through clinical evaluation and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), the unstable knee can now be repaired vs. reconstructed. This is only possible if the ACL is of good quality and if the ligament can be passed posterior to the PCL, both of which are determined in surgery. Acutely (recently) torn ligaments are typically of better quality, and therefore, have a greater chance of being repaired as opposed to the chronically torn ligaments.
  • ACL Rehabilitation - ACL Rehab program for Anterior Cruciate Ligament Repair.

ACL Reconstruction

ACL Injury

  • ACL Injury & Prevention - The knee joint anterior cruciate ligament guides the tibia (shin bone) through a normal stable range of motion. When torn in a skiing or cutting sports injury, the joint loses its stability, and further destruction of the articular and meniscal cartilage results over time. Specific exercises can diminish the incidence of cruciate ligament injury, and new surgical approaches can promptly treat this injury with an early return to skiing. This article describes the mechanism of injury, the author's preferred treatment, and the means to prevent it.
  • Women and ACL Injuries: Taking the Bad News with the Good - The statistics are impressive. Women are two to eight times more likely to sustain an ACL tear in sports that are at the highest risk such as basketball and soccer. The incidence of significant knee injury among females is roughly five times higher per player per hour than for males.
  • Strengthening and Skiing on the Aging Knee - "Doc, I've been skiing for 30 years and have never been injured. Now my legs feel tired, and my knees grind a bit and are sore after skiing on the hard pack or in the bumps. What is going on?"
  • Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injuries in Women - The number of female athletes participating in sports is taking a giant leap forward, practicing and competing at a higher level of intensity than in the past. Unfortunately, the incidence of ACL injuries in females is also rising.
  • Athletic Injuries of the Knee and Shoulder - For a person who engages in athletic activities, nothing strikes more fear in them than the topic of sports injuries. The very words either sends vivid memories of a previous injury or anxiety of the "what if ? ". People who are fortunate enough not to have a lot of experience with sports injuries are not familiar with a lot of the more common ones. And once an injury has been sustained, what can be done for it for the initial and long term care? This paper seeks to help answer some of these questions.
  • Glucosamine Sulfate / Chondroitin Sulfate (Anti-Inflammatory) - These two compounds have gained widespread use for the treatment of arthritic conditions. Though initially skeptical of "homeopathic " natural remedies, our patients have swayed our thinking by reporting excellent symptomatic relief, comparable to any non-steroidal (NSAID) drug.
