About Shoulder Slap Tears
A SLAP tear (SLAP lesion) is an injury to the glenoid labrum which is the cartilage cuff surrounding the socket in which the ball of the shoulder joint sits. The acronym SLAP is short for "Superior Labral tear from Anterior to Posterior"
Causes of Slap Tears 
Causes can include repetitive overhead movements such as throwing, lifting a heavy object or falling onto an outstretched hand.
 
Symptoms of a Slap Tear
The symptoms of a SLAP tear can include:
- A catching sensation with shoulder movements
- Shoulder pain
- Dull throbbing ache
- Difficulty sleeping due to shoulder discomfort
- Shoulder weakeness

Diagnosis of a Slap Tear
A thorough history and physical exam is important to diagnose a SLAP tear. An MRI is often needed to confirm the diagnosis.
 
Treatment for Slap Tear 
Non-surgical Treatment
Proper physical therapy with shoulder strengthening exercises is important to help maintain the shoulder in proper position. Cortisone injections may also be helpful to reduce inflammation.
