The Shoulder

Rotator Cuff Repair

  • Shoulder tendons usually injured in a fall
  • Night pain, weakness with elevation, pain with activities
  • Exam and MRI confirm the tear
  • If torn repair is outpatient, under local block, performed arthroscopically
  • Immediate rehabilitation exercises are crucial to excellent return to full sports

Clavicle Fracture Repair

  • Displaced and Angulated fractures can be set straight and out to full length
  • Intramedullary fixation with a screw and washer works the best for early return to sports
  • Earlier the better for repair but can be performed late as a salvage procedure for non unions

Acromioclavicular Joint Reconstruction

  • Early and late repair of displaced AC joints by reconstruction of the ligaments works best
  • Prefer allograft donor tissue reconstruction without artificial materials or screws
  • Surgery can restore normal appearance and strength

Acromioclavicular Joint Reconstruction

  • Post-Operative Physical Therapy Protocol
  • Early strengthening with the goal to restore full motion

Frozen Shoulder Overview

  • Loss of motion, inability to reach behind or overhead, usually with pain
  • Sometimes related to injury but not consistently
  • Responds slowly to physical therapy and cortisone
  • Arthroscopic release of scar bands often helpful

Frozen Shoulder Release Post-Operative Protocol

  • Manual joint manipulation
  • Spasm release
  • Total body exercise and conditioning
  • Pilates, yoga, stretching, acupuncture sometimes very helpful

Rotator Cuff Repair Post-Operative Rehabilitation Protocol

  • Specific shoulder strengthening program to restore power and motion

Non-Displaced Fracture of the Greater Tuberosity

  • Common after a fall
  • Early rehab with careful strengthening to avoid displacement of the bone

Shoulder Instability (Bankart) Repair Rehabilitation Protocol

  • Coordinated muscle strengthening program to stabilize the shoulder
