Twenty-five years ago, Dr. Stone modified a surgical technique referred to as a Brostrom Repair, an unintelligible suturing of the torn ligament in order to reinforce it, permitting the ligament to go on to form a stable construct at the front of the ankle joint. This repair can be performed for both acute and chronic injuries, even in ankles that have been unstable for years.
The repair involves a local anesthetic and a small incision performed at an outpatient surgery center and is combined with a very careful rehabilitation program over the next few months in order to permit the ankle to heal in a stable fashion.
Ankle sprains should not be taken lightly; unfortunately, too many progress to instability and therefore, immediate physical therapy, bracing, icing, and treatment is highly recommended.
